What it is
KSEB installs a bi-directional meter that records electricity flowing in both directions. What you import from the grid and what your roof exports to it. Your bill is settled on the net position over the billing period.
Why it matters in Kerala specifically
Because generation swings hard with the monsoon. Without net metering, surplus produced on a bright February afternoon would simply be lost. With it, that surplus becomes credit that offsets what you draw during the wet months.
What has to happen first
A KSEB feasibility approval. It confirms your connection and the local network can accept the proposed capacity, and nothing should be installed before it is in place. In practice this approval, not the installation, is what sets the project timeline.
What net metering does not do
It does not give you backup. It is a billing arrangement, not storage. A grid-tied inverter shuts down when the KSEB supply fails. A safety requirement that stops the system energising a line a technician may be working on. If you need power during outages, that is a hybrid system with a battery, which is a different specification and a different cost.
Who handles the paperwork
We register you on the National Portal, file the KSEB feasibility application, follow it up, and handle the net-metering agreement as part of the project.
