Net metering, in plain terms
A bi-directional meter is required
KSEB installs it. It replaces or supplements your existing meter and records flow in both directions.
Settlement is on the net position
You are billed on the difference between what you drew and what you exported over the billing period.
Feasibility approval comes first
KSEB assesses whether your connection and the local network can take the proposed capacity.
It does not give you backup
Net metering is a billing arrangement, not storage. A grid-tied system still stops producing during an outage. If you need power during a cut, that is a hybrid system.

What changes on your KSEB bill
Net metering is the reason the monsoon does not break the arithmetic. Without it, surplus generation in the strong months would simply be lost.
The bill starts showing units imported and units exported separately, with the difference carried as credit. In the strong months you bank credit; in the monsoon you draw it down. The annual figure is what matters, not any single month.
