The short answer

Does SunKraft Solar install rooftop solar in Kochi?

Yes. Kochi is a coastal city built across the Arabian Sea shoreline and the Vembanad estuary, and that geography decides most of what a rooftop solar system here has to cope with. The central wards are dominated by apartment blocks and commercial buildings; the southern and eastern wards – Thevara, Palluruthy, Elamkulam, Vennala, Palarivattom – are mostly independent houses with either Mangalore-tiled sloped roofs or RCC flat slabs.

Property types

What we install on in Kochi

Independent houses

✓  Thevara, Palluruthy, Vennala and Elamkulam have the roof area a 3 kW to 5 kW system needs, on tiled or flat roofs.

Apartments

✓  Central Kochi is apartment-heavy. A rooftop system there needs the owners association to allocate roof space, so the approval sits with the association rather than the individual flat.

Commercial premises

✓  Showrooms and offices around MG Road, Kaloor and Kadavanthra draw most of their power in daylight hours, which is when a solar system generates.

Local considerations

What affects a solar system in Kochi

Salt-laden air

Wards close to the shoreline and the estuary carry salt in the air. Mounting structures, fasteners and enclosures have to be specified for that, and panels need washing more often than inland.

Coconut palm shading

The most common reason a Kochi roof produces less than its rating is a palm to the south or west of the array.

Heritage streetscapes

Parts of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry have older buildings and heritage considerations, so panel placement has to be worked out around what the roof and the street elevation allow.

Questions

Solar in Kochi, answered

Yes. Our office is at Panangad on the southern edge of the city, and we cover the Corporation wards along with the neighbouring municipalities and panchayats.

About 70 to 90 sq ft of shade-free roof per kilowatt. A 3 kW system needs roughly 210 to 270 sq ft that stays clear of shade between about 9 am and 4 pm.

Only with the owners association allocating roof space, because the roof is common property. We are happy to explain the options to an association that is considering it.

Kerala averages about 3.9 units per kilowatt per day across the year, so roughly 1,400 units per kilowatt per year on a well-oriented roof. February to April are the strongest months; June to August are the weakest.
