What is an off-grid solar system?

An off-grid solar system runs entirely on panels and batteries with no connection to the KSEB grid. Everything the site uses has to be generated and stored on site, which means both the array and the battery bank have to be sized for the worst stretch of the monsoon rather than the annual average.

When it is the right answer

Off-grid suits a narrow set of sites

Off-grid is the right choice for a genuinely unserved site. A remote plot, a farm structure, a site where bringing a line in is impractical. Where a KSEB connection already exists, off-grid is almost never the economical answer.

Genuinely suitable

Usually no. Off-grid means sizing panels and batteries for the worst monsoon stretch, which costs far more than a grid-tied system delivering the same useful energy. Where a KSEB connection exists, on-grid or hybrid is almost always the better answer.

The scheme is built around grid-connected residential rooftop systems with net metering. An off-grid installation with no grid connection does not fit that structure.

When there is no practical grid supply. A remote plot, an agricultural structure, or a location where extending a line is not viable.
