The short answer

What is an on-grid solar system?

An on-grid solar system is connected to the KSEB grid and has no battery. It powers your home directly while the sun is up, and any surplus is exported to the grid through a bi-directional net meter and credited to your account. When the sun is not shining you simply draw from the grid as usual.

It is the simplest and lowest-cost way to cut a KSEB bill, and it is what the large majority of rooftop systems in Kerala are. It is also the configuration the PM Surya Ghar subsidy is designed around.

No battery to buy or replace

Batteries are the shortest-lived and most expensive part of a solar system. On-grid avoids them entirely.

Net metering does the storing

The grid acts as your store. Units exported in February are credited against units drawn in July.

Eligible for PM Surya Ghar

Residential on-grid systems are what the national rooftop subsidy scheme is written for.

It does not run during a power cut

This is the honest limitation. For safety, a grid-tied inverter shuts down when the grid goes down. If backup matters to you, look at hybrid instead.

On-grid, answered

No. A grid-tied inverter disconnects when the KSEB supply fails. This is a safety requirement, not a fault. It stops the system energising a line that a lineman may be working on. If you need power during outages, a hybrid system is the configuration to look at.

Yes. On-grid systems need a KSEB feasibility approval and a net-metering agreement, and a bi-directional meter is installed. We file and follow up that application for you.

It is exported to the grid and credited to your account under KSEB net metering, so it offsets what you draw at other times.

Yes, for residential connections. The scheme pays ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, ₹18,000 for the third kW, with a ceiling of ₹78,000.
