The short answer

Does cleaning solar panels actually increase output?

Yes, when the glass is genuinely soiled. Anything that sits on the glass – dust, salt film, bird droppings, leaf litter – reduces the light reaching the cells, and that loss is recoverable. It is one of the few solar problems with an immediate, measurable fix.

It matters more here than in most of India. Roofs near the Vembanad backwaters – Panangad, Kumbalam, Nettoor, Thevara, Aroor – collect salt film that rain does not fully remove, and roofs on the NH corridors collect road dust on top of it.

Cleaning, answered

It depends where the roof is. Near the backwaters or a highway, more often; inland and away from traffic, less often. The honest answer is to let monitoring tell you. When generation drifts below the same period last year and the weather does not explain it, the glass is usually the reason.

On an accessible single-storey roof, with clean water and a soft brush, in the early morning, yes, carefully. Never walk on the panels, never use abrasives, and do not attempt a roof you are not safe on.

Correct cleaning will not. Abrasive pads, pressure washers and harsh chemicals can damage the glass, the coating or the frame seals, and that kind of damage is not a manufacturing defect.
