In our climate an uninsulated concrete or metal roof soaks up sun all day and releases it into your rooms all evening. Your air-conditioner then works through the night undoing it. Insulation goes after the cause instead of the symptom.

What it does
Lower indoor temperature, shorter air-conditioner run times, and a meaningfully smaller cooling load. In metal-roofed sheds and top-floor rooms the difference is immediate and obvious. It also protects the roof itself, because the thermal cycling that cracks waterproofing is exactly what insulation reduces.
Sequenced with solar
Panels shade the roof they sit on, which already helps. Insulate underneath them and you’ve addressed the whole problem. If both are on your list, doing them together saves a second mobilisation and a second set of roof penetrations.
Common questions
Will insulation alone fix a hot top-floor room?
It will make a substantial difference, and in a metal-roofed room it can be dramatic. Whether it’s enough on its own depends on the walls, the windows and how much sun they take.
We’ll look at the room rather than guess, and tell you if insulation alone won’t get you there.
Does insulation reduce the size of solar system I need?
Indirectly, yes. Less cooling load means fewer units consumed, which means a smaller system covers the same share of your bill.
That’s the argument for doing the insulation first and then sizing the solar, rather than the other way round.
